Afsluitdijk
In 1932 the Zuiderzee was separated from the North Sea by the Afsluitdijk, an impressive construction, 30 kilometers long, 90 meters wide at sea level and 7 meters above NAP (Normal Amsterdam Level). It is all thanks to this magnificent feat of engineering that the Zuiderzee became the IJsselmeer. Two years after the huge floods of 1916, the Dutch government decided to build a dyke to separate the Zuiderzee from the North Sea. It was a mammoth operation. The spot at which the last inlet was sealed is now the site of a vantage tower which provides a breath-taking panoramic view of the Waddenzee and the IJsselmeer. |
