The youngest province of the Netherlands officially came into existence in 1986, following the reclamation of some polders in the Zuiderzee. You will notice its youth in the new, modern cities such as Almere en Lelystad. The scenery largely consists of fields, meadows, woods and water, offering panoramic views.

In Spring, you can see the flowering bulb fields here. In Flevoland you can enjoy water sports and swimming on one of its many recreational and border lakes. You will find no fewer than 20 sandy beaches - there are also specific wind surfing beaches. Boat trips are also available. Such as a day trip from Lelystad to Volendam, a round trip across the Veluwemeer (both only available on certain day in July and August, so do check beforehand), and from Almere-Haven a boat departs every Sunday at 1pm to the famous fortress island of Pampus (reservations recommended). It is also a great area for walking and cycling, all scenic areas have marked footpaths, and there are also various cycling routes, such as the Farm Route and the Border Lakes Route. During your visit there is plenty to see for both adults and children. Consider a visit to the historic fishing village of Urk, the former island of Schokland, or one of the tourist attractions in Lelystad. Here you will find Batavia Wharf, the Nieuw Land Poldermuseum (new land polder museum), and Bataviastad for a day of shopping. The Veluwe is not far off! Here, you can visit National Park de Hoge Veluwe or see a dolphin show in Dolfinarium Harderwijk.
Schokland. The former island of Schokland was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1995, thanks to its extraordinary history. Islands such as Schokland have lost their battle with the sea, and its inhabitants were forced to leave the island. You will learn more about the history of the island that is no longer an island, in the Museum Schokland.
A visit to the fishing village of Urk. Walk along the lanes and around the harbour, or climb the lighthouse!
Walibi World (Biddinghuizen) is a ‘green’ theme park offering exciting rides such as Splash Battle and various roller coasters.
Would you like to do some skiing or snowboarding? You can do so at the Riviera Snow Village (Biddinghuizen).
There is plenty to see in the province’s capital Lelystad: The Batavia wharf, Bataviastad (outlet shopping), the Nieuw Land Poldermuseum, the national aviation theme park Aviodrome, and the Nature Park Lelystad.
A day out to the Veluwe.
