Lelystad - Capital of Flevoland Print E-mail

It's coastal area features a number of musea. A replica of 17th century VOC merchant ship Batavia can be visited, including it's shipyard. Close by is Batavia Stad, an outlet shopping centre. An aviation museum is located near Lelystad Airport. Nature points of interest: Oostvaardersplassen, Natuurpark Lelystad.  Flevoland was the last big polder in The Netherlands. Oostvaarderplassen is one of the best Dutch nature parks, but it sits in human made land.

Almere
Another new city. Almere is nowadays one of the biggest cities in The Netherlands, but still there is almost nothing to see here, only if you like suburbia, or modern city planning go here.

Other destinations
Urk

A small fishing community. This was once an island.

Schokland
This used to be a village, but an evacuation in 1870 put an end to it all. It is an interesting place to go.
Schokland was once an island, but in the Second World War, the Dutch reclaimed the land from the water that surrounded the island, into the Noordoostpolder (North-east polder), and thus also definitively saved Schokland.

Halfway through the nineteenth century the island had had so much to endure by the sea - which took away most of the land of the islet - that the king of the Netherlands ordered its evacuation.

Unfortunately its saviour will also mean its end, as the clay under the now former Island is slowly drying out. The island already lies 1.5 meters lower than it lay in the 1950's.

Noordoostpolder
Where used to be water there is now land. The main town in the Noordoostpolder is Emmeloord.

Biddinghuizen
Nothing in Biddinghuizen, but Walibi World is close-by. Also site of the annual Lowlands music festival.
