Limburg is the southern-most of the twelve provinces of the Netherlands. It is located in the southeastern part of the country and bordered by Belgium to the south and part of the west, Germany to the east, the Dutch province of North Brabant partly to the west, and the province of Gelderland to the north. Its capital is Maastricht.

Limburg takes its name from the fortified castle known as Limbourg, situated on the small river Vesdre in the
Ardennes. It was the seat of a medieval princedom which extended into the Meuse region north of Liège. After the Napoleonic era, the great powers united the region with the new Kingdom of the Netherlands, of which Belgium was also part. The first King, William I, gave the region the name of Limburg.

Limburg is a province of considerable cultural diversity. The language spoken there comprises numerous related dialects. Even the tiniest village has its own ensemble or brass band. Limburg's cultural heritage abounds with local marksmanship festivals and numerous folkloric events. Many churches in Limburg are of Romanesque or Gothic origin, often with an astounding array of treasures such as sculpture, vestments. and other religious objects.

Limburg's Provincial Government has its seat in the Provincial Government Buildings located along the river Meuse in Maastricht, the oldest city in the Netherlands. Maastricht, or Mosae Trajectum, was founded by the Romans two thousand years ago along the military and trade route between Gaul, now France, and the military reinforcements along the Rhine. Maastricht has more than 1450 monuments and historic buildings which, after Amsterdam, is more than in any other city in the Netherlands.
