Madurodam in the dark Print E-mail

When twilight falls thousands of tiny lights create a fairytale atmosphere in the miniature city. Many visitors come to Madurodam especially for this. Madurodam has developed a special evening programme to highlight this magical image. Every evening after sunset visitors will be submerged in a fascinating Dutch fairytale that tells the story of Hansje Brinker and the fight against the water. Madurodam uses the most modern projection techniques for this show of water, light and lasers.

Visitors will see nothing during the day. All the technology is concealed in the dikes that surround the miniature city and under the ground. The story only comes to life in the evening. With video and laser projection, computer-controlled light, coloured fountains and sound broadcast through headphones the city is transformed into a grand open-air spectacle. Visitors are totally absorbed by the story of Hansje Brinker and his fight to protect the Netherlands from a flood. The complete miniature city, so all the buildings, water features and even the airport are part of the decor of the light show. The audience follows the show, which lasts approximately 20 minutes, from various locations in the centre of the miniature city.

Hansje Brinker is the son of a lockkeeper. He is fascinated by the never-ending fight against the water and enjoys helping his father operate the storm locks. He listens with great attention to the stories that he tells as they work. Hansje frequently has nightmares about floods and living under sea level. He understands very well how important his father’s work is.

He dreams of working as an engineer and devises what he calls a Delta plan. One windy morning Hansje is cycling along the dike. Suddenly he sees a jet of water streaming out of the dike and realises that it is about to break. The town below is in danger.

Without hesitation he sticks his finger in the hole in order to stop the leak. He calls out for help. But will his cries be heard?

Light show technology
The show consists of various elements:

    * Video projection a large screen and a water screen
    * Laser animation, projection of laser animation on a large projection screen, the edge of the dyke and a water screen
    * Laser effects, to create the right atmosphere
    * Light effects, to create the right atmosphere
    * Water effects, by means of fountains illuminated from below
    * Music, exciting and appropriate to the story (through headphones)

    * 700 m sleeve pipe;
