Vlieland - one of the Dutch Wadden Islands Print E-mail

A bird's eye view of the Dutch Waddenislands will tell that the island of Vlieland is different from the other islands. Where all other islands are oriented to the west-side, Vlieland is oriented to the east-side. You can tell by the the fact that the village and the docks are situated westly while on Vlieland this is the other way around. The enormous sand supply of the Vliehors together with the predominantly western winds, formed the highest sand dunes of the Wadden islands -40 meters high- called the 'Vuurboetsduin'. On top of it the light house is situated.

Sheltered by the 'Vuurboetsduin' lies the village Oost-Vlieland, of which the oldest known facts date from 1245. Starting from the early 17th century until the start of the 19th century, the village is blooming because of its convenient location on the shipping route to the colonies. The village is protected by dykes and surrounded by woods and dunes. The village is known for its cosy atmosphere, partly because of the presence of several old buildings and monuments. In this beautiful atmosphere you can take a lovely stroll between shops, cafes and terraces.
