Chabot Museum - Rotterdam
Hendrik Chabot (1894-1949) was a Rotterdam artist who became famous as an expressionist painter, sculptor and graphic designer. From 1939 to 1947 his art concentrated almost exclusively on the theme of 'war' and is hence invested with a sombre grandeur. The museum building belongs to the same time (1938), but it would be a long time (1991) before it was honored with the Chabot collection. Nonetheless, this functional white villa with its flat roof, steel window frames and copious glass is echoes the solemnity of Chabot's oeuvre and, as such, forms an appropriate setting for his works.

Mesdag Museum - The Hague
Close your eyes and you can almost smell the fresh paint. The atelier where Mesdag produced some of his greatest works was much like the reconstruction in this painter's studio, which belonged to his wife, Sientje. Here among the artist's actual possessions is where his spirit lives on. The building next door, which was commissioned by Mesdag himself as a store-house for his art collection, is also part of the museum. The museum's collection comprises an impressive assortment of works from The Hague and Barbizon schools, which are famous for their contribution to Dutch nature, landscape and seascape paintings.

Mesdag Panorama - The Hague
Helped only by a handful of artists, Mesdag completed this masterpiece in the amazing space of three months. The Mesdag Panaroma, a full 14 meters high and 120 meters wide, stretches across a round pavilion. The effect is an astoundingly realistic panorama of the old fisherman's village of Scheveningen. Sand, dunes, cavalrymen, fishing boats, wreckage and the towers of The Hague spread out against the sunset. This is perhaps the only painting ever produced that allows you to enter inside - literally inside - the world it depicts.

His lifetime passion for art resulted in a remarkably fine collection, which is housed at Amstel 218. Among the canvases are two portraits by his friend and protegé Rembrandt van Rijn: one of the artist's mother and one of Six himself (believed by many to be the best portrait Rembrandt ever produced). The collection also boasts works by other old masters (including Frans Hals and Albert Cuyp) and some excellent furniture and porcelain. The Six Collection is so exceptional that you have to produce your passport when buying tickets (obtainable at the Rijksmuseum).

You can still see the bullet holes in the staircase walls. But the museum also features a unique collection of Delft pottery, some Delft Old Masters from the 16th and 17th century, tapestries, silverware, medieval sculptures and portraits of the Dutch royal family from William of Orange to the present day.

Van Abbe Museum - Eindhoven
Everything revolves around the roaring twenties in this remarkable museum of Modern Art. We can safely say, without exaggeration, that all the trends of this extraordinary era are represented in its rich collection: from Cubism to Surrealism, from Pop Art to Cobra, and from Realism to Minimal Art. The collection includes works by heavywieghts such as Picasso, Miró, Chagall, Kandinsky, Karel Appel, Judd, Kiefer and many many more? Attention is also paid to typically Dutch movements, represented principally by Mondriaan. Renovation activities have led to the works being moved temporarily to Entr'Acte (until 2001), a building with excellent lighting and many small but ideal rooms in which the works get the attention they rightfully merit.
