Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences

Although not a university, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences has many links with Dutch universities; through it mission to be the forum, conscience and representative of Dutch science.

Universities of Applied Sciences

Another type of institution of tertiary education in the Netherlands is the hogeschool. While the literal translation is "high school", the institutes are actually equal to universities of applied sciences. They can also be compared with colleges, polytechnics, and universities of applied arts. These institutions normally award Associate's and Bachelor's degrees, but some have also started to offer some Master's degrees.

Hogescholen are not allowed to be called universiteit in the Dutch language. In international context, the phrase "University of Applied Science" is to be used for the majority of these schools, as suggested by the Dutch Minister of Education in early 2008. [3] Although this name will be adopted for the vast majority of Hogescholen, some specific exeptions have been made for for example (tertiary) Art schools, and Schools of Education. These schools be allowed to use an internationally recognisable name.
