Chambres des Canaux: The Tolerant Home

From November 1 to 17, 2013, the exhibition Chambres des Canaux: The Tolerant Home takes place at a number of special locations around the Amsterdam canals.

Over this period, more than 15 artists who share a connection with the city will show their works in unique canal-side locations, including the official residence of the mayor and the Huis van Brienen. The exhibition is curated by Siebe Tettero and commissioned by Stichting Amsterdam 2013, celebrating 400 years since construction began on the Canal Ring.

The invited artists are all connected to Amsterdam in various ways, be it living here or having completed studies at city art institutions, such the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten. The list of participating artists includes: Marlene Dumas, Joep van Lieshout, Germaine Kruip, David Claerbout, Jan Rothuizen, Robert Zandvliet, Ina van Zyl and Fiona Tan. Further confirmations will be announced over the coming months.

Although focused on contemporary art, the work submitted by the artists will take inspiration from two related themes: the renowned tolerant nature of Amsterdam and also the initial development of the Canal Ring. This period brought about the rapid economic and cultural development of the city, ushering in the Golden Age – a historical period that still sparks imaginations and which laid the foundations for the modern nation we know today.

The public will be able to purchase a Chambres des Canaux exhibition pass that provides access to all participating locations. A publication containing descriptions of the special locations and artists, plus a suggested route, will accompany the exhibition.
