Volkshotel: a new creative hotel in Amsterdam

The former office building of the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant, currently housing workspaces for creative businesses, artists and a rooftop bar, is being transformed into a new hotel.

It will be named the Volkshotel and is set to open in April 2014. A creative hotel for Amsterdam.

When it opens, the Volkshotel will offer 172 unique rooms for guests and it will also remain a meeting place for creative minds, as areas of the building will continue to serve as office space for creative professionals. What’s more, the existing rooftop bar called Canvas will be extended, enjoying a new 360-degree panorama of the city courtesy of two roof terraces. In addition, the building is set to contain a grand café, novelty shop, a recording studio and a nightclub.

Development of Overhoeks Tower
The Volkshotel is not the only spectacular transformation of well-known office space in Amsterdam. Opposite station Amsterdam Centraal, directly across the River IJ, the former Shell head office, known more commonly as the Overhoeks Tower, is being transformed into an eye-catching cultural hub. It will house the headquarters of event specialist ID&T, an incubator for new creative talents in the music industry, a hotel, restaurants and a nightclub.

Hotel hotspot
These unique hotel developments illustrate that Amsterdam is a true hotspot for investors in the hotel industry – especially for those who think outside of the box. According to real estate consultancy Savills, more than 1,400 new hotel rooms were added to the Amsterdam market during 2012, bolstered by the opening of several new luxury hotels.

The demand for hotel rooms in the city in the coming years is expected to increase by an average of 4% per year. To meet this demand, the City of Amsterdam is working to add thousands of new hotel rooms by 2015.
