Rotterdam an exciting & modern metropolis

Rotterdam is a young and dynamic city with a world-class port. The city is known internationally for its modern architecture, design and creativity, numerous festivals and events and vibrant clubbing culture.

Architecture & Design
The skyline of Rotterdam is constantly changing. The latest high-rise building is named ‘De Rotterdam’ and has been designed by famous Rotterdam-based architect Rem Koolhaas. The much-anticipated new Central Station will be completed by March 2014. The Market Hall, designed by MVRDV, will be the first indoor market hall in the Netherlands. The building consists of a forty metre tall arch in which apartments are being constructed and is scheduled to be completed by September 2014.

Rotterdam: World Port World City
Rotterdam, the ‘Gateway to Europe’, has the largest seaport in Europe and is centrally located at the crossroads of major road, rail and water links. Downtown Rotterdam is only 15 minutes from Rotterdam The Hague Airport. When travelling from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, the Fyra train takes you to Rotterdam in just 26 minutes. Rotterdam offers an ample choice of accommodation. The opening of several new hotels means the city currently has some 4,000 rooms.

Rotterdam: People Make the Inner City
The municipal authorities have made plans to intensify housing density and green spaces in the inner city with a view to tapping into the full potential of downtown Rotterdam. A confident inner city is vital for the resilience of the city as a whole. Rotterdam has developed seven densification strategies to increase the availability of attractive housing in ways that improve the overall quality, liveability and microclimate of the inner city.

Sustainable Rotterdam
In keeping with its desire to make the city green in sustainable ways, Rotterdam is also working on realising several green strategies. Rotterdam has added 75 vegetable gardens, 6,000 trees and 850 square metres of façade gardens since 2010. More than 140,000 square metres of green rooftops have also been realised. Another climate innovation is the water retention project that focuses on a combination of water storage and improving the quality of urban public spaces.

Rotterdam: City of Festivals
Rotterdam was the winner of the 2010 IFEA World Festival & Event City Award. The International Festivals and Events Association praised Rotterdam for its positive local environments supporting festivals and events worldwide. The prevalence of professional organisations with creative ideas in Rotterdam is enhanced by the city’s excellent infrastructure. The services and organisations in the city also work in close cooperation in order to realise events successfully.
